CCD versus CMOS – has CCD imaging come to an end ?

چکیده
CMOS image sensors are today challenging the existing Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) in several application fields. Improved architecture and processes have to a large extent overcome early weaknesses of CMOS imagers, namely with respect to noise and sensitivity. Todays " Active Pixel Sensors" are typically based on sub-micron technologies that have been optimized for optical sensing and can rival CCD in most aspects. In addition CMOS imagers offer significant advantages in terms of low power, low voltage and monolithic integration, allowing for example the manufacture of miniaturized single-chip digital cameras. The integration of added functionality on the chip or even at the pixel level also opens up completely new opportunities. This paper gives a short review of the advantages and weaknesses of both CMOS and CCD technologies for imaging applications.

An interline CCD imaging array with on-chip A/D conversion
In this paper we describe an interline CCD imaging array which features high-speed, on-chip, parallel A/D conversion. In addition, we present test results from fabricated devices. The imaging chip was fabricated through MOSIS in a double-poly 2:0m CCD/CMOS technology on a chip with total area 2:25mm 2:22mm. The chip is composed of two components, namely, a 28 39 pixel, interline imaging array a...

متن کاملDigital autoradiography using room temperature CCD and CMOS imaging technology.
CCD (charged coupled device) and CMOS imaging technologies can be applied to thin tissue autoradiography as potential imaging alternatives to using conventional film. In this work, we compare two particular devices: a CCD operating in slow scan mode and a CMOS-based active pixel sensor, operating at near video rates. Both imaging sensors have been operated at room temperature using direct irrad...
